Agentic AI

Building a winning team with Agentic AI, IBM Bob and TD SYNNEX

As organisations race to adopt Agentic AI, simply adding more agents won't guarantee success. Much like building a winning football team, the real advantage comes from choosing the right players, putting them in their correct positions, giving them clear roles, and creating a system that enables them to work together.

Agentic AI and the Transfer Window: Building Success for the Future

As a long-suffering Leeds United fan, I’ve spent more transfer windows than I’d care to admit convincing myself that this is the season everything finally comes together.

Every summer brings the same debates. Do we need a striker? A creative midfielder? More strength in defence? Have we overpaid?  Most importantly, have we built a squad capable of delivering results over an entire season?

Successful clubs rarely win because of one superstar signing. They build balanced teams, recruit with purpose, and create a system that allows every player to contribute to the best of their ability.

Increasingly, I think the same is true of Artificial Intelligence and Agentic AI.

New Competition Has Arrived

Every football season introduces new challengers. The same is true in technology.

Established software vendors are now facing disruption from a wave of AI-native providers promising faster, cheaper and simpler alternatives to traditional enterprise software.

Whether it’s planning, automation, analytics, customer engagement or decision-making, organisations are increasingly being told:

“Why use your current enterprise software when an AI platform can do it all?”

It’s an attractive proposition, but much like signing a star player based purely on YouTube highlights or EAFC ratings, success is rarely that simple.

The real challenge is not acquiring AI. It’s building a team that can consistently deliver results.

AI Agents Are Your New Players

I think of AI agents as members of a football squad: each has a specific role.

Individually, players can be highly effective, but football matches are not won on individual talent alone. They are won by teams that work together.

The same principle applies to AI.

This includes:

  • A sales agent that drives opportunities.
  • A planning agent that analyses forecasts and identifies risks.
  • A service agent that resolves customer issues.

Deploying isolated agents across the business may create short-term improvements, but sustainable success requires coordination, communication and a shared strategy.

Every Great Team Needs a Great Manager

Football’s greatest teams are not defined by their players; they are defined by the system that brings them together.

Manchester City had Guardiola, Manchester United had Ferguson, and Leeds had the greatest of them all – Don Revie.

In the AI world, the role of the manager is increasingly being filled by orchestration.

Platforms such as IBM watsonx Orchestrate are helping organisations manage multiple agents, coordinate workflows, connect business systems and ensure agents work together toward a common objective rather than operating independently.

Without orchestration, you have talented individuals. With orchestration, you have a team.

IBM Bob Is Your Director of Football

These days, football clubs rely on more than managers. They have directors of football responsible for recruitment strategy, player development, governance and long-term planning. That is how I increasingly view IBM Bob.

If AI agents are the players and watsonx Orchestrate is the manager, IBM Bob is the sporting director, providing the structure, governance and long-term strategy needed to build a successful, high-performing team.

Rather than focusing on individual AI interactions, IBM Bob helps organisations establish a framework for building, governing and scaling AI capabilities across the enterprise.

It helps answer the questions that matter, including:

  • Which agents should we build?
  • How do we manage risk?
  • How do we govern adoption?
  • How do we scale successfully?
  • How do we ensure measurable business value?

The clubs that consistently win trophies aren’t the ones making emotional signings. They’re the ones who have planned, developed and implemented a structured recruitment strategy.

The same principle applies to Agentic AI.

IBM Planning Analytics: Your Midfield General

Every successful football team needs players who can see the game before everyone else. The midfielder who spots opportunities, analyses risk and controls the tempo. In business, Planning Analytics increasingly plays that role.

When combined with Agentic AI, organisations can move beyond traditional reporting and forecasting to create intelligent planning experiences that allow users to interact through natural language and receive actionable recommendations.

In the discussions I’m having with partners, they’ve highlighted the growing demand for agentic capabilities, combined with Planning Analytics, to deliver governed, business-focused outcomes.

Instead of producing reports, agents can produce decisions. Instead of highlighting problems, agents can recommend actions.

That changes the conversation from data management to business performance.

The Teams That Win Also Manage Risk

Not every transfer works. The same risk exists with AI.

Many organisations are rushing to deploy AI capabilities without establishing the governance, compliance, security and operational controls required for long-term success. The most successful AI programmes are balancing innovation with control.

Enterprise AI platforms increasingly provide governance, policy management, monitoring and compliance capabilities designed to help organisations scale AI responsibly. Talent wins matches. Governance wins championships.

Where TD SYNNEX Fits In

The best clubs wouldn’t ask a manager to build everything themselves. They rely on specialist coaches, scouts, analysts and development teams. That’s the role TD SYNNEX is playing within the AI ecosystem.

We help partners move beyond the hype and focus on creating real business outcomes through AI strategy workshops, agent development frameworks, IBM Bob development environments, watsonx.ai and watsonx Orchestrate environments, proof-of-concept support, technical enablement and solution architecture expertise. Together, these capabilities help partners move from experimenting with AI to building repeatable, scalable solutions for customers.

Our goal is simple: help partners build a winning AI team before their competition does.

Final Whistle

The transfer window may be closed, but the race to build successful AI businesses is just beginning. The organisations that thrive won’t necessarily be the ones with the most agents. They’ll be the ones with the best strategy, the best governance, the best orchestration, and a clear focus on business outcomes.

The winners won’t be those who sign the most players. They’ll be the ones who know what team they’re trying to build.
