TD SYNNEX Technical Team Spotlight: Russell Shacklock

With more than 37 years of IT experience, Russell combines deep technical knowledge with commercial awareness to help partners design practical, customer-focused IBM infrastructure solutions.

A Trusted Technical Resource for IBM Partners – Meet Russell

Russell is a Senior Technical Presales Specialist at TD SYNNEX and a trusted technical resource for IBM Business Partners. He helps partners architect solutions to business problems, validate proposed designs and translate complex infrastructure requirements into solutions that deliver clear customer value.

His expertise spans IBM servers, storage arrays and tape solutions across both open systems and mainframe platforms. By combining technical depth with a strong understanding of commercial considerations, Russell helps partners develop well-balanced solutions that are technically sound, appropriately sized and aligned to the customer’s priorities.

A Career Built Across Technology and Distribution

Russell began his career working with architecture, 3D CAD and Computer-Aided Facilities Management solutions. He later moved into the IBM Business Partner and distribution ecosystem, building broad experience across infrastructure technologies, solution design, commercial models and partner enablement.

Over a career spanning more than 37 years, he has seen technology and customer expectations change significantly. That experience gives him a valuable perspective: understanding established enterprise environments while helping partners adopt new platforms, consumption models and approaches without losing sight of operational or commercial realities.

Turning Complex Requirements into Right-Sized Solutions

A recent area of Russell’s work has involved comparative performance-metric sizing, mapping workloads from enterprise-class IBM Power9 systems to equivalent scale-out IBM Power11 platforms. The objective is not simply to replace one server with another, but to avoid oversizing and create a solution that makes effective use of IBM Power Enterprise Pools 2 and its cloud-like consumption model.

Russell has also supported the migration of existing IBM i environments from Power9 to Power11, including the transfer of operating-system licences and associated Licensed Program Products. This requires careful consideration of capacity, entitlement, migration dependencies and commercial implications, helping partners present customers with a practical and defensible transition plan.

Enabling Partners and Growing Skills

Partner enablement is central to Russell’s role. He works with both sales and technical teams to strengthen their understanding of IBM platforms and software, build confidence and improve the quality of customer conversations. His support can range from early opportunity shaping and architecture discussions through to solution validation and technical education.

Russell is also a qualified TD SYNNEX mentor. He has mentored colleagues as they develop skills in new platforms and software, sharing practical experience and helping them apply new knowledge effectively. For Russell, technical expertise has the greatest impact when it is shared and used to help others succeed.

Three Questions with Russell

What do you enjoy most about your role? “Every day is different, and I am always learning.”
What value do you bring to partners? “I combine technical and commercial awareness to help partners create customer-focused solutions that deliver genuine value.”
What is one piece of advice you would give a partner? “Educate me on the problem your customer is trying to resolve. Start with the business challenge, and then we can work together to architect the right solution.”

Skills Beyond the Day Job

Away from technology, Russell is a qualified senior county-level football referee and a specialist assistant referee in a semi-professional football league. Refereeing demands sound judgement, clear communication, consistency and the ability to manage people effectively in fast-moving situations.

The management and interpersonal skills developed through these roles have proved equally valuable when working with partners. They support Russell’s calm, balanced approach to complex discussions, helping stakeholders remain focused on the facts, the desired outcomes and the decisions needed to move forward.

He also is a warm water only surfer and enjoys the challenge of every wave being different.

Why It Matters

Infrastructure decisions can have long-term technical and financial consequences. Russell’s combination of platform expertise, commercial awareness, migration experience and partner enablement helps turn complex choices into clear, deliverable solutions. Whether sizing a new Power platform, planning an IBM i migration, validating a storage or tape design, or developing a partner’s technical capability, his focus remains the same: understand the customer’s problem and build the right solution around it.
