The Growth Opportunity with IBM’s Select Territory
The most interesting conversations I’ve had with IBM partners over the last twelve months haven’t been about AI. At least, not directly.
Whether I’ve been sitting in partner planning workshops, at IBM events, or simply catching up with partners across the UK, the same question keeps coming up:
“Where do we actually grow from here?”
That’s a much more important question than which AI model to use or which software product is launching next. Because growth doesn’t come from technology alone. It comes from identifying where customer demand is moving – and having the capability to meet it.
From where I sit leading the IBM Software team at TD SYNNEX UK, I believe IBM’s Select Territory represents one of the biggest growth opportunities our partner community has seen in years. The opportunity isn’t just about new products. It isn’t even just about AI. It’s about a new route to market centred on tens of thousands of organisations that have historically sat outside IBM’s direct engagement model but are now firmly in focus.
For partners, this isn’t simply another programme. It’s an opportunity to build a scalable, recurring software business.
Why partners have never been more important
Throughout my career, one thing has remained constant: customers place their trust in partners who understand their business.
Technology vendors will always drive innovation, but it’s partners who translate that innovation into real-world outcomes. They understand local markets, build long-term relationships and stay alongside customers long after the initial deployment.
That’s why I see IBM’s focus on the Select Territory as such an exciting opportunity. IBM is placing greater emphasis on its ecosystem to reach organisations that need enterprise-grade technology and trusted guidance to deliver meaningful transformation. For partners, this isn’t simply another route to market. It’s recognition that the future of growth will be built through collaboration.
The partners who thrive over the next decade won’t necessarily be those with the biggest portfolios. They’ll be the ones who can combine technology, expertise and trusted relationships to help customers achieve measurable business outcomes.
That’s the opportunity I see—and it’s exactly why I’m so passionate about helping our partners build the skills, capabilities and confidence to lead these conversations.
Building capability is now more important than selling licences
One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing across the software market is the move from transactional sales towards recurring customer success. The partners creating the most sustainable growth are those investing in expertise, repeatable services and long-term customer relationships.
But that requires more than product knowledge; it requires sales enablement, technical proficiency, marketing support and a clear go-to-market strategy.
That’s exactly why TD SYNNEX has developed Select Blue.
TD SYNNEX Select Blue
Over the last year, my team has spent a huge amount of time talking to partners about what they need to succeed. The answer wasn’t another portal or another enablement programme. Partners told us they wanted clarity and to know where to focus. They wanted help turning IBM’s software strategy into a repeatable commercial model.
That’s the thinking behind Select Blue.
Rather than expecting partners to navigate IBM’s evolving software strategy alone, we’ve created a structured framework that helps businesses identify the right Sales Plays, build expertise around IBM’s priority software portfolio, develop repeatable service offerings and progress towards IBM’s Ideal Partner Profile.
Just as importantly, Select Blue isn’t only about enablement. It’s about accelerating growth. Through our TD SYNNEX IBM specialists, solution architects, business development resources and marketing expertise, we’re helping partners build practices that generate recurring revenue rather than one-off transactions.
It’s the programme I wish every IBM software partner had available five years ago – not because it tells you what to sell, but because it helps you build a practice around where the market is heading.
Why acting early matters
Every major technology shift creates early adopters. Those businesses build expertise first. They establish customer references first. They develop repeatable offerings first. And they often become the partners customers associate with that technology for years afterwards. IBM’s investment in the Select Territory represents exactly that kind of moment.
The partners investing today will be better positioned to take advantage of new incentives, stronger IBM engagement and increasing customer demand as the strategy continues to evolve. Waiting until the market matures may simply mean competing against partners who have already established themselves.
The opportunity belongs to partners willing to lead
Throughout my career, I’ve always enjoyed helping partners grow. Not simply by introducing another technology, but by helping them build businesses that are sustainable for the long term.
That’s why I’m genuinely excited about where IBM is heading. The technology is impressive, and the investment is significant. But the real opportunity isn’t IBM’s – it’s yours.
The partners who invest now – in skills, in capability and in outcome-led selling – will be the ones customers turn to over the next decade.
My team and I are looking forward to helping you make that happen.
Whether it’s through strategic business planning, acceleration workshops, skills enablement, sales training, account targeting resources, lead generation campaigns, or providing sandbox and proof-of-concept environments, everything we do is designed to help our partners build capability, create customer value and grow your business.
